Pedro

screen saver 1 300x221 PedroPedro came to live with us quite unexpectedly!  We caretake a beautiful farm in PA in the Poconos.  The owners don’t live here but come up on occasion. They were all here for the month of June. When one of the owners came up from Florida she brought her four dogs, three cats and three exotic birds. The “kids” came, the father came and we had a bustling time of a month.  At the end of the month the owners, their dogs, cats and birds all left…except Pedro. He stayed behind to join our family!

At the time, Pedro was a 4 month old, 11 pound, Chihuahua/Jack Russell mix, a Jackahuahua, aka Cap’n Jack (now best known as Dudie).  J. found him in Florida a couple of months before arriving at the farm and took him in because he needed a home. She is an animal rescuer and simply couldn’t pass up on sweet, feisty Pedro. She is the quintessential animal lover and has a heart bigger than the huge old barn on this farm.

While here, J. realized that it really wasn’t the best thing for her family or Pedro to take in another animal at this time, though she was willing. When Pedro hit it off with my little family it was an easy decision for J. and for us to make adoption plans.

We weren’t thinking of having another dog at the time but had decided that when we were ready Pedro was just the kind of dog we would want. When I asked Buttercup if she wanted a little brother she walked right up to Pedro, kissed him, wagged her tail and started playing with him. He, of course, responded in kind. Buttercup is in retirement now, and having a little brother to train, play with, and care for seems to be making her very happy.  Pedro is a smart, feisty little fellow who loves to snuggle.

When Pedro first arrived at the farm with the owners, he broke his leg!  The vet did not want to put a cast on it because he was so young, and he assured us that it would heal just fine.  Sure enough, it did heal just fine, and it was a hoot watching Pedro zoom around on three legs just as fast as he could go on four.  And he got to do rehab in the spring fed lake just below the house.

Pedro is a fine little fellow and brings a lot of joy and life into the home (and a few other things, too!).

Oh, I forgot to tell you that he loves to kayak!
