This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.
Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

Middle of March already. Hard to believe. Two illnesses, one injury, one significant relationship change, two emergency surgeries in the family, one death—all in a matter of two and half months. I haven’t felt well physically since the middle of December. What surprises me is how well I feel emotionally and spiritually. I attribute this to my daily spiritual practices. No matter how I’ve felt, no matter what the circumstance, I’ve done my practices. I haven’t done them out of place of discipline or super heroism, rather, I have done them because they sustain me. Sure, discipline is part of the equation, but deeper than that is a motivation from my core. I know now that these practices work. I know now that they carry me. I know that they connect me to the most authentic part of myself and to Spirit. They even connect me to those around me. The practices have become as necessary as brushing my teeth, putting on my seat belt, and eating. I don’t do them out of a sense of obligation, rigidity, or dogma. I do them because they feed and sustain me.
I breathe more easily throughout my day—no matter what happens. I feel the sadness, grief, anger, and frustration but they simply pass through instead of taking up residence. I can welcome them, knowing they will be on their way shortly.
Have you downloaded the 3-Steps to Transformation eGuide yet? I describe three of my favorite practices in it. They are simple and take little time for a busy day. Even if you only incorporate one of the practices, you’ll find significant support for your life. Download the eGuide by entering your email address on the upper right-hand sidebar. Let me know what you think about the practices and whether or not you find them helpful. I’d really love to hear.
