Alive to What is About

I like working in the yard because, invariably, I find treasures.  Today, I was happily weeding—minding my own business, I might add—when this little green fellow began to tease me.  He kept flitting in and out of where I was sitting as if to get my attention, “Hey lady!  Photograph me; would you?”  I didn’t have my camera with me, so I knew the opportunity would be lost; nevertheless, I ran into the house to fetch my camera.  To my delight, the little guy was still frolicking about when I returned.  He and I amused each other for the next several minutes.  He actually seemed to be posing for me!  I couldn’t help but smile and laugh.  I am grateful to be alive to what is ‘round and about me.

    cute!

I crack up at the hummingbirds who now guard “their” feeder and almost attack me when I am gardening near it. In fact, since it is by the garage door, anyone getting out of their car toward the front of the house is subject to a warning fly by. Each bird has its own unique chirp or buzz and flying pattern. Soon I will have to set aside time to see if I can capture them with my camera – but those little buggers are fast! Now to go make more sugary yumminess for them…

He definitely looks like he’s posing. Handsome creature.

Today Lily and I were back on the bike, and it was such a blessing to be alive to our surroundings. We saw so much; jewel weed in bloom, the small mountains of the Holyoke Range, a turkey vulture circling slowly, cattails, elderberries, a number of acquaintances we hadn’t seen in a while, a number of friendly strangers who were calling out and admiring her handlebar-mount green bike seat (it looks like this: http://www.ibertinc.com/).

I’m reminded that every single time I spend time outdoors with Lily, it’s a grand thing, no matter what else is going on in our lives (or maybe especially when the remainder of our daily lives is more stressful).
