Surprised, Touched, Inspired

I recently met with a friend whom I haven’t seen for 32 years.  We had reconnected through Facebook and had some exchanges, but meeting in person was a real treat.  She gifted me with a book she thought I would enjoy.  She determined this by reading my status updates and my blog.  I was touched that she paid such close attention.  My Grandfather’s Blessings by Rachel Naomi Remen, is a simple inspirational book of blessings.  I’ve been reading it each morning before I begin my day.

Rachel Naomi Remen is a medical doctor who cares for cancer patients and their families.  She has long understood the role of spirit in health.  She credits her grandfather, who was a Jewish mystic of the Kabbalah tradition, for teaching her deep compassion.  Dr. Remen recommends a nightly practice to help cultivate seeing with new eyes:  Every evening review your day, asking three questions and recording the answers in your journal.

  1. What surprised you today?
  2. What moved or touched you today?
  3. What inspired you today?

I decided to start doing this each evening as a way to open more fully to my daily life.  Already I can see how it helps me savor experiences more deeply.  Just this morning, two beautiful deer grazing by the driveway surprised me.  It was 6:15 and I was going to get the horses from the pasture.  The deer were not startled and we stood gazing at each other for long minutes.  It was such a treat and I took that gift inside my spirit and savored it there.  Knowing I would be writing about the experience later this evening inspired me to linger longer with the deer.

I was surprised to receive the lovely gift from my friend.  I was touched by her generosity and spot-on intuition.  I am inspired to pay closer attention and be more generous in my relationships.

Thank you, Sabrina!

What a heartfelt gift from your friend. Now, into my sixties, I have found if you have lived your life with a true, loving, and open heart, you will find that you will be conscious of these things in your life. The 3 questions are a great way of learning of how to be in the here and now versus our fast paced world. Carla, thank you for sharing these simple, yet profound questions for if applied they help us to appreciate our lives, those in it, and the many things that come our way.

    What surprised you today?
What moved or touched you today?
    What inspired you today?

Carla, I like the idea of asking oneself the three questions. For many people this would provide some pausing moments as they rush through their busy life. Your photo is beautiful. — barbara
