Georgia on my Mind

It’s official, and so unexpected;  I’m moving back to Georgia!  I moved away 25 years ago.  Honestly, I never thought I would return.  Many other parts of the country resonate with me more than GA, but most of my family are there, and I want to be near them again.  My dad (that’s him in the photo!) will be 85 years old this year.  I want to spend time with him.  We’ve developed a sweet relationship in recent times, and I want us to be able to enjoy that relationship.  My brother is in GA, too.  We don’t really know each other well anymore, and I want the opportunity for that to change.  I want to get to know him again; after all, we were very close when we were young.  Living only 45 minutes away will allow us an opportunity to spend time together.

My little family and I are leaving the northeast.  We are moving to a lovely little horse farm on Lake Oconee, smack dab in the middle of our families.  We will care for the property and three beautiful horses.  And family will be about an hour away–south, east, and west of us.  We also have friends in Atlanta and Augusta.  It will be good and interesting to reconnect with them.

This is another huge adventure.  I feel that something significant has shifted in me.  It seems important and good.  I’m excited and a little scared.  I’m sad to be leaving some of what I love.   And I look forward to what may unfold.  Mostly, I’m delighted to have the opportunity to be near family again.

Impermanence, flexibility, and openness—these are some of the qualities we have learned in recent years and they are serving us well.  I am deeply touched and grateful.

Y’all have a good day now, ya hear!

Congrats! I consider GA over PA and UPGRADE, but I’m sure there are some who would disagree :) Living in Bama myself, and in the fair state of GA often. So welcome, neighbor!

Congratulations on the move. My parents moved back to Georgia (from the Pacific Northwest) after nearly 40 years and are happy to be back home. I miss them very much, but I know that they’re happier in the south. My mom called me last month to report that they had snow. So funny.

    Good luck with the move!

So wise to be near your dad in his 85th year. I recorded my family elders and now that they are no longer with me I can listen to their stories and smile, not insinuating that your dad will not be around in the near future — any member of the family can practice recording other members for a future voice genealogy. Just some thoughts now that you will be by family. — barbara
