The sanderling was scurrying around busily on this morning. It was hard to capture a shot of the bird. She finally paused long enough to cast a glance my way and I pressed the shutter.
Lately, I’ve been busier than usual. I don’t mind being busy when that busyness is focused, intentional, and toward a goal; but random busyness drives me crazy. When my attention is here, there, and over yonder—flitting from one thing to another—I begin to feel off-balance and overwhelmed. I don’t get much accomplished and I waste a lot of time. It seems to boil down to being distracted.
There are countless distractions in our lives these days and they can overtake us if we’re not intentional about our days. This is where the practice of presence makes a big difference in my life.
But even when I begin my day with intention, I find that I must return to that intention throughout the day. Sometimes, it’s as simple as taking a moment to get still and breathe.
